K-League 2 Suwon upsets Ansan 2-1 in final to keep promotion hopes alive
Professional soccer’s Suwon Samsung revived its hopes of promotion to the top flight with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the final round of the regular season, the first time it has competed in the K League 2.
Led by Byun Sung-hwan, Suwon came from behind to beat Ansan Greeners 2-1 at home in the 38th round of the Hana Bank K League 2 2024 at Yongin Mir Stadium in Gyeonggi Province on Wednesday.
Suwon finished the season with 15 wins, 11 draws and 10 losses, 온라인카지노사이트 56 points and 46 goals.
In K-League 2, the winner is automatically promoted to the first division, while the second-place team plays the 11th-place team from K-League 1 in a relegation playoff (PO).
The third-, fourth-, and fifth-place teams will go through a semi-PO-PO phase to determine which team will play the 10th-place K League 1 team for promotion.
From 6th place in K League 2, there is no promotion at all, so 5th place in the semi-playoffs is the cutoff point for the first division.
Suwon, the first of the 13 teams to play all 36 games and sit in fourth place, now has to hope that other teams fail.
Currently, fifth-place Jeonnam Dragons (15 wins, 9 draws, 11 losses – 54-57 goals) and sixth-place Busan IPark (15 wins, 8 draws, 12 losses – 53-52 goals), who have played one game less, are fighting for a spot in the PO with Suwon.
Out of the three teams, only two can punch their ticket to the PO.
For Jeonnam, a win over Seoul Eland on the 9th will allow them to leapfrog Suwon and move into fourth place.
Busan is also ahead on goal difference, so if they win their final match against Bucheon FC on the same day, they can leapfrog Suwon.
However, if both teams draw or lose, they can’t move past Suwon.
Suwon finished the first half without conceding a goal, but conceded a goal in the 10th minute of the second half to Kim Young-nam.
It was Bae Seo-joon who came to the rescue for Suwon, whose promotion chances were in danger of disappearing altogether if they lost.
Substituted in the 18th minute of the second half, Bae Seo-joon equalized just five minutes later with a cool left-footed shot from the penalty spot.
With momentum on their side, Suwon completed the comeback in the 29th minute of the second half when Cho Yoon-sung finished off a corner kick cross from Paulinho with a powerful header.
Meanwhile, Lee Land, who had beaten Gyeongnam FC 3-0 in the previous match, secured at least third place and qualified for the PO for the second time since its inception in 2014.
Having competed in the PO in 2015, their first season in the professional stage, Lee Land will now prepare for the promotion tournament after the regular season for the first time in nine years.
