Kwan-jang Chung pulls off thrilling upset as Heungkuk Life falls to lowest-scoring tie in fourth set

Women’s professional volleyball’s Kwan-jang Jung pulled off a dramatic upset against Heungkuk Life.

The team defeated Heungkuk Sinsaeng 3-2 (21-25 26-28 25-22 25-7 18-16) in four sets in their Dodram 2023-2024 V League Women’s Division match at Samsan World Gymnasium in Incheon on Saturday.

Chung ended Heungkuk Sinsaeng’s opening four-game winning streak and improved to 2-1 on the season.

Heungkuk Life seemed to be on a roll, taking the first and second sets with Kim Yeon-kyung “Ssangpo” and Yelena Mrazenovic (registered name Yelena).

However, Jung Kwan-jang switched gears in the third set.

In the third set, she put up an iron wall and recorded six team blocks.

Every single one of those blocks came in a contested game, and five of them were against Yelena, which was enough to turn the tide of the match.

At 6-6, Jung Ho-young blocked back-to-back open attacks from Yelena, and at 19-21, Park Eun-jin and Megawatti Pertwee (real name Mega) combined for three straight blocks.

Then, at 23-22, Yelena’s unforced error and Park’s open point intersected.

Setting the tone, Jeong sealed a commanding 25-7 win in the fourth set.

Her seven points in a set tied the record for fewest points in a single set in the history of the V League for both men and women.

Chung also collected six blocks in the fourth set, while Giovanna Milana (real name Gia) bounced back from her 1-3 set slump with seven points.

At 19-4, Chung scored 12 straight points to go up 21-4. Along the way, Jung served up four service aces.

This tied the record for most consecutive points in a match and also tied the record for most consecutive service aces (12).

In the unforgiving fifth set, Jung showed her backbone.

At 13-13, a service error by Jia gave her match point, but Mega’s sharp diagonal attack brought the match to deuce.

Mega then took a one-point lead with an exciting attack. Heungkuk Sinsung asked for a video review, but the ball came in generously inside the line.

At 17-16, the score was tied at two points apiece, and Jia, who had a disappointing performance on the day, scored the final point with an atoning spike.

Mega finished with a team-high 31 points, including two blocked shots, while Jia (20 points-3 blocked shots), Jung Ho-young (14 points-5 blocked shots), Park Hye-min (13 points-1 blocked shot), and Park Eun-jin (12 points-4 blocked shots) also played well.

In the men’s match at Suwon Gymnasium, KEPCO battled back from a full-set deficit to win 3-2 (22-25 25-23 18-25 27-25 15-13) against Hyundai Capital.

KEPCO earned a valuable first win of the season after two losses, while Hyundai Capital fell to a four-game losing streak after opening the season.

Taith Lesser Host (real name Taith) scored 32 points, while Shin Young-seok and Seo Jae-duk added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For Hyundai Capital, Ahmed Iqbairi (registered name Ahmed) scored 40 points, but his performance was overshadowed by the team’s loss. 파워볼분석
