At the Paris Paralympic D-100 press conference held in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 20th.
Jeong Jin-wan, president of the Korea Sports Council for the Disabled said,
“We had a disappointing performance at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games,
but we saw potential as promising athletes performed well at the Hangzhou Asian Paralympic Games held last year.”
“We will be able to achieve our goal as we provide a lot of diverse support,” he said.
The Korean disabled athletes won double-digit gold medals in six consecutive Paralympic Games from the 1988 Seoul Games to the 2008 Beijing Games,
but after winning nine gold medals at the 2012 London Games and seven gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games,
they only won two gold medals at the Tokyo Games.
The Korea Sports Association for the Disabled conducted its own analysis to find that generational change had failed,
and focused on discovering and nurturing new players.
In particular, the Sports Association selected 20 athletes in 5 sports as candidates for medals and received support from the Sports Medicine Team and the Korea Institute of Sports Policy and Science.
We also put a lot of effort into controlling the condition of our players.
Chairman Jeong Jin-wan said, “Some of the players will move to Europe in advance and start training at a pre-camp.
During the tournament, we plan to set up a meal support center and Korea House in Paris to provide Korean food lunch boxes to the players.”
As of the 20th, Korea has secured over 60 Paralympic qualifications in 10 sports.
The national team is expected to obtain an additional 10 to 20 qualifications in the future,
and the athletes participating in the Paralympic Games will be decided through individual selection events for each event.
The head of the team will be Bae Dong-hyun, chairman of the BDH Foundation, who participated as the team leader at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics.
